Free Grade 5-6 Science Unit: DNA

Free Grade 5-6 Science Unit: DNA

Another easy-to-use, open-and-go science unit for your cycle 3 students is here! It's a great introduction to DNA, a quick way to review, or a fun way to expand when your learners want to know more! Plus it includes a fun experiment using some simple kitchen items and fruit that allows students to extract and view DNA!

I have really been having a lot of fun making these quick science units to use with my own kiddo who will be in grade 6 this coming school year. I wanted a way to introduce some concepts to her that would cover the Quebec Progression of Learning, but also allow us room to explore topics she's interested in. I also wanted to avoid spending time on topics she's already learned about or things that just don't pique her interest. That's exactly why I designed them this way!

In this unit, we'll explore what DNA is, how its structured and why its important. It's a great unit to use right after doing the Plants and Animal Cells unit I posted last week too.

What's Inside:
  • 4 pages of reading
  • A fun coloring page, showing how DNA base pair work
  • An experiment with lab pages

You can download this free unit using the link below!
Whether you're homeschooling, teaching a co-op class, or even in a classroom (in-person or digital), I hope this unit helps you and your students learn while engaging in meaningful discussions and having fun! Feel free to share this unit, but please keep my website at the bottom of the page as per my terms of use. (Please note that although this unit is free, it is PROHIBITED to resell it).

Plant and Animal Cells

Are you ready for another Simply Scientific Unit? Because here it is! They will label an animal cell, compare the two using a diagram, and plan a fun project to show their learning!

Just like the first Simply Scientific! Unit on Electricity (click here to see that) this unit is easy to use and right to the point. It's a great starting point to expand knowledge if your learner is interested, or can work great if you just want to quickly cover or review material. These units are made to cover the Progression of Learning in the Quebec education system, but can be used no matter where you live to cover science concepts!

So what's inside? You'll find:

  • 3 pages of reading describing the differences and similarities between plant and animal cells
  • A labelling worksheet
  • A venn diagram where learners will compare the two cells
  • A fun project that students will plan and complete themselves for their portfolios

FREE Science Unit for Grades 5-6: Electricity (Exploring the Material World)

New Science Unit for Grades 5-6:

Electricity (Exploring the Material World)

If you're on the hunt for a simple, open-and-go science curriculum for your kids in grades 5-6 (in Quebec, or anywhere!) then I've got you covered with my new Simply Scientific Unit - Electricity!

This unit will help cover the competency in the Quebec Progression of Learning for Elementary Cycle 3 (grades 5-6) : Understand matter, energy, and electrical circuits. It also helps cover the portion of their science called the Material World.

It's a free download, so take a look below to learn more about it and feel free to jump ahead to the download link!

Simple, Quick & Expandable!

If you're looking for a quick way to cover some material your kids aren't too interested in, then this unit is perfect! It includes:

  • Two reading passages that explain concepts simply, in kid-friendly language
  • A worksheet that requires students to label a simple circuit
  • A comprehension question page including multiple-choice and short-answer questions
  • An experiment requiring simple household objects
  • Experiment pages where students can fill in their hypotheses and conclusions
It's perfect for homeschool portfolios and a great way to review if you've done units on electricity before too!

BUT
Keep in mind this is a SIMPLE unit
This unit also gives your student room to explore and expand their knowledge more!
If they get interested in the topic of electricity, you can grab some books from the library, watch some great Youtube videos, build bigger circuits, buy some electricity science kits,  or even visit a hydroelectric dam! You can always expand!

Perfect for portfolios- Great for anyone!

I especially made this unit to follow the Quebec learning standards, as this is where I homeschool my own kids. But, of course, if you live anywhere else in the world, you can easily use it in your homeschool too!

You'll notice that the bottom of every page clearly labels which part of the Quebec curriculum. In the Quebec elementary science learning progressions, it is required to teach from 3 thematic areas - Earth and Space, Material World and Living Things. This unit covers a portion of the Material World theme.
