I Can Math Booklets: Count to 120 Counting and Cardinality Workbook

I Can Math Booklets: Count to 120
Counting and Cardinality Workbook

Another I Can Math Workbook is here! Want to see more? Check out my math booklet page!

If you've been enjoying doing these math workbooks with your learners, you're really going to love this one too! Full of plenty of practice that zeroes in on a standard, these workbooks help you assess your kids learning in an easy no-prep format!

Focusing on Math Standards

Instead of focusing on many things at once when learning about cardinality, this workbook will allow your learners to focus on one thing - counting from 1 to 120! All cut-and-paste or coloring activities, these worksheets take the focus away from writing numbers and only require kids to cut, paste, color, and count!

I find this method helps those kids who need a little more practice with number order or identifying numbers without making it feel overwhelming. Kids also LOVE that they get a cool certificate after completing the worksheets you decide to put into their books!

Counting to 120 Worksheets? Here's Plenty!

I put a lot of time into making these sheets really fun for your learners too! Lining up numbered seashells on a beach, digging up gems in a number mine, and setting a cupcake table for a party are just a few of the fun worksheets you'll find inside!

Plus, I have included counting charts that show kids only 20 numbers per page from 1 to 120 - a great way to focus on sets they may struggle with! You can use counter chips or blocks to cover up some numbers and have them tell you which numbers are missing, or you can have them count both backward and forward.

CVC Story 6: The Cat and the Rat A Phonics Reading Story for Beginner Readers

 Phonics CVC Story 6:

The Cat and the Rat

It's time for another phonics CVC story! Want MORE phonics stories? Head to my phonics page!

In this 6th phonics story, we are still focusing on the first two word families -at and -an. It also includes new and previously learned sight words! Like all my phonics stories, this one includes a simple story, comprehension questions for your beginner readers and after-reading activities to build those literacy skills!

What's Inside?

Inside this CVC phonics story, you'll find more than a simple story for your beginner reader! You'll find comprehension questions to discuss out loud, plus activities that build important literacy skills so your reader will succeed later on. You'll also find, as usual, an optional grammar lesson.

  • A 7-page story to read
  • Reading comprehension discussion questions
  • A simple grammar lesson (A question mark means a question is being asked)
  • A drawing comprehension activity (one with writing lines, one without) to see your learners understood what they read
  • A literacy activity focused on a simple theme: was the story silly or serious?
  • A 'Making Predictions' drawing page
  • A 'Making connections' activity (Draw a question you have about the story)

Why go beyond reading?

Why bother to include comprehension questions and literacy activities in a 7-page story with barely any words? It's all about making those early literacy connections! Challenging our readers to not only just read words on a page but actually understand what they mean, whether they're serious or funny, asking a question or making a statement - these are all ways to prepare our learners for the bigger world of reading they'll face in upper grades. Finding themes, recognizing that stories go beyond what they say on paper - these are things we want our kids to know and realize.

So while you certainly don't have to include these activities (and definitely do not always need to do all of them!) it's a great way to help them build early reading comprehension and literacy skills.

Phonics CVC Story 5: The Man Ran

Phonics CVC Story 5: The Man Ran

CVC Phonics Stories for Beginner Readers
Want to see MORE CVC Stories? Visit my Phonics page here!

It's time for another CVC Story unit 🥳 This is booklet number 5, and the second book in the -AN word family series! In this story, your learners will explore -an words, sight words, and learn some new grammar and literacy concepts!

My CVC stories go beyond simple sounding out words. They include comprehension activities and questions, activities focused on literacy concepts like making connections, and even simple grammar lessons for beginner readers! Letting your kids practice reading these stories and doing these activities will not only help them learn to read, it will help prepare them for elementary-level learning.

What's Included in a CVC Phonics Story?

Inside each story unit you'll find:
  • A story focusing on word families and sight words
  • Spiral learning of previously learned phonics rules and words
  • A simple grammar activity: In this booklet? Teach your learners all about the exclamation point!
  • A 'Making Connections' activity
  • Comprehension Questions to help learners understand what they are reading
  • A Drawing Comprehension activity

All of these lessons and activities will help your learner realize that sounding out words is more than just busy school work, it's a way to help them express themselves and read stories, learn about new worlds and concepts, and even laugh at some silly texts (The cat ran on the man!' in this story is always a hit!)

Comprehension Activities Build Literacy Skills

When we show kids that reading is about more than words on a page, it helps bring home the fact that words and sentences can be made into stories or books. It's exciting! Once they know how to read AND understand a story, it's a whole new way to explore the world around them. Not only do the connections in their minds fire up at the thought that books are stories and a way to learn, but that reading and learning is all around them. Words on a restaurant menu, words on street signs or supermarket signs, words on home appliances...the list goes on! All of a sudden they begin to notice that words make up our whole world! (And later units will explore this more with making text to world connections!)

Why Grammar?

When teaching younger kids to read, you may not think of including something like grammar right away. But showing kids how words and sentences work in a very simple way helps them understand their reading better. For example, in the first CVC story (the cat on the mat) kids learn that words can be put together to make sentences. It's a simple oral lesson and they can look through the book and point to all of the sentences they read. In the second CVC story, they learn that sentences end with a period and this means we take a small pause. They can then practice reading sentences and noticing the periods at the end of each.

These simple concepts build on one another and even though our young learners might not memorize them perfectly at first, it will help them when they start more formal grammar lessons in the future. It will also be just another way to point out that reading is so much more than just words.

Phonics CVC Story 4: The Van (AN words)

The newest phonics story is here!
This is the first one in the -an words series.
You can see the rest of the phonics books on my phonics page.

I am excited to have made the next booklet in the phonics stories series! It includes all of the things you found in the first few too, including a short story for beginner readers, some comprehension questions, a grammar lesson, and more!

Literacy is more than reading words

Being literate is more than just being able to read words on a page. It means being able to understand what you've read, and later on, read into the deeper meanings of texts. But before we get our learners there we need to start simple: building phonetic skills and helping them understand that texts have meanings.

A short little story like this might seem overly simple to us. The thought of taking meaning from it might seem ridiculous. But for our emerging readers its a small peek into a world of reading that can open up for them, stories that can make them think about other worlds, people, and scenes.

Inside a Phonics CVC Story

That's why inside each phonics story you'll find more than just a simple story for your learners to practice reading. These stories follow the same sequence of word family words and sight words that my CVC Booklets here do. Every week a new word family and new sight words are introduced. While the booklets are for basic practice and getting to know the words, the stories are to show that words can be sentences, stories and fun! Not only will they discover that they can read a story on their own, but they can learn to understand stories through comprehension questions and activities, learn to summarize through drawings, and even learn that we can make reading more exciting through grammar concepts.

Inside Phonics Story 4 You'll Find:
  • A CVC Story
  • An optional grammar lesson (Words can have more than one meaning)
  • Comprehension Activities (Questions, Drawing Comprehension, Draw your van

I Can Math Booklets for Kindergarten Math 2: Counting and Cardinality Within 20

I Can Booklets for Kindergarten Math 2: Counting and Cardinality Within 20

This is booklet 2! If you want to see booklet 1 click here!
To see more math books, go to my Math Booklets page!

Counting. Recognizing numbers. They seem like such basic skills, but sometimes they're difficult for kids to grasp. We often mix up counting with writing numbers, counting objects, etc. but sometimes our learners just need to count without focusing on writing or counting out groups of objects.

That is exactly what these books focus on: All of the worksheets can either be done orally or with coloring, cutting and pasting. They're designed to focus on one skill at a time. In this case, counting within 20.

What's Inside an I Can Booklet?

Inside each of my math I Can booklets, you'll find worksheets and charts that focus on one skill (or a few interconnected ones). In booklet 1, learners focused on counting from 1 to 10. In this booklet the focus will be on counting from 1 to 20. Diving into numbers past ten prepare your learners to count up to 100, and by tens.

Inside you'll find:
  • Oral practice charts: Learners practice counting to 20 out loud
  • Worksheets: Worksheets are either cut and paste or color-in
  • An achievement certificate: Once your learner has mastered the skill or finished the book, you can give them this certificate

Download the booklet here!

You can download the booklet by clicking on the link below. As per my terms, you may use it in classrooms, homeschools, for tutoring and virtual classes, but please always leave my website watermark (messybeautifulfun.com) on the pages. Thank you and enjoy learning to count!

Phonics CVC Story 3: The Bat Cat!

Phonics CVC Story 3: The Bat Cat!

Another new phonics story is here! The third one in the -AT family word group!

Looking for the other CVC stories? Find them here or by heading to my phonics page!

This new book features a fun story, comprehension questions, a simple (optional) grammar lesson, and a few fun activities too!

These CVC booklets are great for reading practice and assessment whether you're teaching in a classroom or your own learners at home.

What Inside CVC Stories?

Inside every CVC booklet you'll find more than just a story, because reading is more than just saying words. Early literacy skills are so important when it comes to kids literacy skills later on, and being sure your kdis understand what they're reading is such an important part of that. Aside from that, research shows that learning things like grammar conventions (sentences begin with capitals, for example) are great to introduce to early readers and will give them a leg-up in reading, writing and spelling later on, even a simple introduction!

Activities and more!

That's why in each booklet I've included some small activities you can use with your learners to help them understand that reading is fun to talk about after you've read it, that books have messages that we can understand, and that stories can help us be creative.
While a simple story about a bat cat might not seem like a great work of literature, to a new reader it's a small peek into a world of stories and information that they can read, understand, and learn from. It's exciting to see!

Download the CVC Story

You can download the CVC story by clicking on the link below and use it in your classroom, homeschool, or online classes. You can also find more phonics stories here, and also find phonics learning booklets that go with these stories there too!

Enjoy learning and bringing up the next generation of readers <3

What Inside a Phonics Story?

My CVC stories go beyond just a simple story for your learners ot read. They include a short story to practice reading words, but extra activities to be sure your learners are actually comprehending what they're reading.

Inside you'll find:
  • A short story featuring the -at word family (bat, sat, mat, hat)

Let's Read! Phonics Stories and Lessons

 Phonics Stories

For building early literacy skills

If you loved my free CVC and sight word books then you're going to love these companion stories that go with them!

Building literacy skills is so important. We don't just want out learners to be able to read, we want them to be able to understand what they're reading, images in storybooks and how words work.

The one thing I find so many phonics programs lacking is a way to check not only kids reading abilities, but early literacy skills that can lead to literacy success later on. I think we've all looked at a complex text before and though "Huh? I better read that again!"

Teaching kids these early literacy skills like comprehension, speaking about what they read, noticing patterns in sentences and words, these can all lead to later success in secondary education when they start to really need to learn about the messages behind what they're reading.

That's what I hope to help with through these short stories!

Be sure to check the Phonics Page for more books coming soon!

Let's Read! Phonics Word Books: A FUN and Easy Way to Practice Reading!

A new fun way to practice reading that's easy to print and go!

Early literacy is so important, something I strongly believe in. That is why I decided to make these simple open and go phonics booklets for teachers and homeschoolers who need some easy to print and use materials!

With simple pictures and letters, simple activities and routines kids can get used to, using these booklets an easy way to build a great reading foundation.

As these are made, you'll be able to find all of them on my phonics page HERE

These booklets can be used for as long as you'd like, but I would recommend introducing a new one every week. Previous words learned should also be spiraled in every week using activities like the word cards and read and draw pages.

Vocabulary is an important part of learning heart words or sight words. That's why I included pages showing the heart words with sample sentences to read aloud to learners, while also prompting them to say a sentence using the word aloud to show their understanding.

Lastly, I included a fun activity kids can do that works as a great assessment tool to show that they have learned the words practiced in the book, as well as in previous weeks.

Using small word cards to build sentences, they will cut and paste their phrases onto the page, then draw a picture illustrating their sentence.

More info, booklets, and pacing schedule will be coming too!

For now, enjoy the booklets available here - with more on the way!

Free French Speaking Game

Free French Speaking Game

A fun way to practice speaking French!

When teaching my own kids French, I always found teaching them to speak the most difficult part. I could use French during the day, go over vocabulary list after vocabulary list, and speak to them in French during lessons. But sometimes it just wouldn't stick.

That's why I started playing this game with them when practicing speaking during our lesson time. Kids LOVE to speak about themselves and everything they love, we all do! And that's why this game is the perfect way to really get them engaged in learning new vocabulary and using French to speak about everyday life!

In this free French unit, you'll find sentence stem cards. Some are full sentences that you can begin with, while others are more open-ended. These sentences revolve around 10 themes that use some of the most commonly used vocabulary.

The idea is to start by reading the sentence, then adding something simple onto it.

For example, starting with
"Je lis."

The next person could add on:

Je lis ... des livres.

Then it could continue, each person taking a turn:

Je lis des livres dans mon lit.

Je lis des livres dans mon lit tous les week-ends.

Je lis des livres dans mon lit tous les week-ends après le déjeuner.

Keep going until you really can't add on anymore!

I have also included some handy vocabulary sheets to use with the cards.
Here, kids can find some vocabulary to help them along, as well as a space to write down new words they have learned or their trasnlations.

The ten themes included in the unit are Myself and Likes, Family, School, Daily Routine, At Home, Food, Activities, Weather & Seasons, Vacations and Weekends, and Feelings. These are a great base to begin getting in more and more vocabulary every week!

I also recommend spiraling the older vocabulary questions you've used in other weeks as your progress. That way, you can be sure your learners are retaining everything they've learned!

After completing all of the units, you can continue using the question cards here and there as a gentle reminder of everything they learned.

Free Weather Graphing Activity for K-2!

Free Weather Graphing Printable Activity for K-2!

Graphing is an important math skill to practice early on in our learners math journeys. Once they have basic graphs down in early elementary, it's a lot simpler for them to understand more complex graphs and charts in older grades.

Graphing is also super FUN in lower grades! There are so many, many things kids can graph - how many birds they see each day, how many red toys they have in their room, how many white vs black socks they have in the laundry basket....there are endless possibilities! But one of my own kids favorites was always graphing the weather!

Two graphs for different ages and levels

In this mini freebie unit, I've included two different graphs for two different age groups or skill levels. There is a simpler version with only the weather symbols and terms. Your learners can use this to keep track of how many days of the week they noticed each type of weather. It's also a great way to practice reading weather terms and speaking about the weather.

I have also included a version with days on the side. This version is perfect for grades K-2, as it covers the graphing skills they would be practicing that year.

Need More activities? Look at this!

I have also included a fuller version in my shop if you'd like to turn this graphing activitiy into a full weather unit for your little ones!

This version includes a mini weather notebook (also with 2 levels of handwriting), weather word cards (all words on the chart, plus hot and cold) written in primary lines they cab practice tracing or use to help them write. It also has a super FUN activity that kids always love - my Draw and Write pages!

Kids will trace the weather term and draw what they would do in that type of weather. It's a fun way to talk about weather and how it affects our lives, and is a great activity to keep little ones busy.

You can download the free graphs by clicking the link below. Enjoy learning!

NEW French Read Write and SPell Unit 10: Ir Verbs and Animals

NEW French Read Write and Spell Unit 10:
Ir Verbs and Animals

If you've been following the French Read, Write, and Spell program with your learners, then after 10 units, they are becoming quite proficient writers, readers, and speakers in French! In this unit, kids will continue to expand their vocabulary and grammar skills by learning to conjugate the group of verbs ending in -ir in French, as well as learning vocabulary related to animals and describing animals.

Read, Write & Spell Units

If you're new to my French Read, Write, and Spell units, you can take a look at unit 1 and try out the first 2 weeks for free here! The great news is that the program is very affordable (about $1.50 per week) and ca each unit lasts 2 weeks (or longer if you feel your learner needs more time!)

It starts very simply by kids learning a few basic sight words in French and stringing them together to form sentences. It then expands every week into more detailed vocabulary and grammar exercises. It is recommended for grades 3+, since it requires kids to know some basic grammar terms (nouns, verbs, verb tenses like past, present, future).

Unit 10 of French Read Write Spell for FSL

In unit 10 (weeks 19-20), we will dive into conjugating -ir verbs in the present tense. The unit contains everything kids need to learn this skill, and increase their vocabulary, writing, and listening skills:
  • A word list of new words to learn
  • A vocabulary booklet with pages of common vocabulary words (theme this unit: animals)
  • A verb booklet with verb conjugations, exercises, and practice sheets
  • 16 dictation exercises that can be done over two weeks
  • 8 worksheets to be done over 2 weeks (or at your pace)
  • A complete answer key

Download the Unit & What is Next?

You can download the newest unit of Read, Write and Spell in any of my shops below! Just click on the link to go there.

What's coming up in future units...
The next unit will be coming soon! Here is what you can expect to see in the next few units:
  • Continued practice with er and ir verbs
  • Conjugating verbs ending in -re
  • Increased French instruction on the worksheets
  • MORE vocabulary! (school, calendar, weather, vacations and more!)
  • Conjugating verbs in past and future tenses (we'll cover futur proche, futur simple, passe compose, and imparfait)
