Let's Read! Phonics Word Books: A FUN and Easy Way to Practice Reading!

 

A new fun way to practice reading that's easy to print and go!

Early literacy is so important, something I strongly believe in. That is why I decided to make these simple open and go phonics booklets for teachers and homeschoolers who need some easy to print and use materials!

With simple pictures and letters, simple activities and routines kids can get used to, using these booklets an easy way to build a great reading foundation.

These booklets can be used for as long as you'd like, but I would recommend introducing a new one every week. Previous words learned should also be spiraled in every week using activities like the word cards and read and draw pages.

Vocabulary is an important part of learning heart words or sight words. That's why I included pages showing the heart words with sample sentences to read aloud to learners, while also prompting them to say a sentence using the word aloud to show their understanding.

Lastly, I included a fun activity kids can do that works as a great assessment tool to show that they have learned the words practiced in the book, as well as in previous weeks.

Using small word cards to build sentences, they will cut and paste their phrases onto the page, then draw a picture illustrating their sentence.

Free French Speaking Game

A fun way to practice speaking French!

When teaching my own kids French, I always found teaching them to speak the most difficult part. I could use French during the day, go over vocabulary list after vocabulary list, and speak to them in French during lessons. But sometimes it just wouldn't stick. 

That's why I started playing this game with them when practicing speaking during our lesson time. Kids LOVE to speak about themselves and everything they love, we all do! And that's why this game is the perfect way to really get them engaged in learning new vocabulary and using French to speak about everyday life!

In this free French unit, you'll find sentence stem cards. Some are full sentences that you can begin with, while others are more open-ended. These sentences revolve around 10 themes that use some of the most commonly used vocabulary. 

The idea is to start by reading the sentence, then adding something simple onto it. 

For example, starting with

"Je lis."

The next person could add on:

Je lis ... des livres.

Then it could continue, each person taking a turn:

Je lis des livres dans mon lit.

Je lis des livres dans mon lit tous les week-ends.

Je lis des livres dans mon lit tous les week-ends après le déjeuner.

Keep going until you really can't add on anymore!

I have also included some handy vocabulary sheets to use with the cards.

Here, kids can find some vocabulary to help them along, as well as a space to write down new words they have learned or their trasnlations.

 The ten themes included in the unit are Myself and Likes, Family, School, Daily Routine, At Home, Food, Activities, Weather & Seasons, Vacations and Weekends, and Feelings. These are a great base to begin getting in more and more vocabulary every week!

I also recommend spiraling the older vocabulary questions you've used in other weeks as your progress. That way, you can be sure your learners are retaining everything they've learned!

After completing all of the units, you can continue using the question cards here and there as a gentle reminder of everything they learned.

Free Weather Graphing Activity for K-2!

Free Weather Graphing Printable Activity for K-2!

 Graphing is an important math skill to practice early on in our learners math journeys. Once they have basic graphs down in early elementary, it's a lot simpler for them to understand more complex graphs and charts in older grades. 

Graphing is also super FUN in lower grades! There are so many, many things kids can graph - how many birds they see each day, how many red toys they have in their room, how many white vs black socks they have in the laundry basket....there are endless possibilities! But one of my own kids favorites was always graphing the weather!

Two graphs for different ages and levels

In this mini freebie unit, I've included two different graphs for two different age groups or skill levels. There is a simpler version with only the weather symbols and terms. Your learners can use this to keep track of how many days of the week they noticed each type of weather. It's also a great way to practice reading weather terms and speaking about the weather.

I have also included a version with days on the side. This version is perfect for grades K-2, as it covers the graphing skills they would be practicing that year.

This version includes a mini weather notebook (also with 2 levels of handwriting), weather word cards (all words on the chart, plus hot and cold) written in primary lines they cab practice tracing or use to help them write. It also has a super FUN activity that kids always love - my Draw and Write pages!

Kids will trace the weather term and draw what they would do in that type of weather. It's a fun way to talk about weather and how it affects our lives, and is a great activity to keep little ones busy.

NEW French Read Write and Spell Unit 10: 
Ir Verbs and Animals

 If you've been following the French Read, Write, and Spell program with your learners, then after 10 units, they are becoming quite proficient writers, readers, and speakers in French! In this unit, kids will continue to expand their vocabulary and grammar skills by learning to conjugate the group of verbs ending in -ir in French, as well as learning vocabulary related to animals and describing animals.

If you're new to my French Read, Write, and Spell units, you can take a look at unit 1 and try out the first 2 weeks for free here! The great news is that the program is very affordable (about $1.50 per week) and ca each unit lasts 2 weeks (or longer if you feel your learner needs more time!)

It starts very simply by kids learning a few basic sight words in French and stringing them together to form sentences. It then expands every week into more detailed vocabulary and grammar exercises. It is recommended for grades 3+, since it requires kids to know some basic grammar terms (nouns, verbs, verb tenses like past, present, future).

Unit 10 of French Read Write Spell for FSL

In unit 10 (weeks 19-20), we will dive into conjugating -ir verbs in the present tense. The unit contains everything kids need to learn this skill, and increase their vocabulary, writing, and listening skills:

• A word list of new words to learn
• A vocabulary booklet with pages of common vocabulary words (theme this unit: animals)
• A verb booklet with verb conjugations, exercises, and practice sheets
• 16 dictation exercises that can be done over two weeks
• 8 worksheets to be done over 2 weeks (or at your pace)
• A complete answer key

Free Math Poster Find Fraction of a Number

 Here is a free poster and worksheet for finding the fraction of a number. This is always my preferred method to teach (although there is another way: making the whole number into a fraction, but I find this the quickest).

I made this quickly to help my daughter remember how to find the fraction of a number and I hope that you and your learners will get good use out of it too!

Play-Based, Nature-Focused Math Curriculum for your youngest learners

MessyBeautiful Math is all about bringing learning and play together. When my kids were younger, I wanted a way to teach them that would focus on play, imagination, being outdoors - but still meeting standards and those all-important early math literacy skills! That is how these lessons, worksheets, and centers were made!

Now, I've put them all together into a focused, rigorous curriculum that can be used in many ways keeping it as short or as long as you'd like. Every unit spans one month and focuses on one skill: unit 2 focuses on numbers 6-10 (Unit 1 covered numbers 1-5)

But my child knows how to count!

Many kids do know how to count to ten by this age, but do they undertsand what it means? Can they visualize every number, amount, numeral and representation? That's the focus of this curriculum: having learners use numbers and amounts in everyday life and relating them to their representations.

And if this all sounds like foreign language to you, no worries! Every lesson is written in simple instructions, with plenty of alternatives, and ways to extend lessons.

Every unit includes outdoor activities (that could also be done indoors!), worksheets made for ages 4-6, and plenty of dramatic play, active games, fun crafts and more! You, as the teacher, can follow the lessons fully or just take small activities from them that fit into your day.

What's Inside Preschool Unit 1?

Inside this unit you'll find everything you need to teach your kids about the numbers 1-5, BUT this unit goes way beyond just teaching how to count. Through easy games, fun crafts, nature walks quiet journaling and simple worksheets, it helps kids relate numbers to real life concepts, amounts, objects, and numerals. It's the perfect way to set them up for success in math! 

Here are just a few of the fun activities included in the 4 weeks of this unit:

• Making a math journal: Learners sit quietly in nature (or indoors!) and explore the world around them by drawing representations of numbers including objects and even sounds they hear!

• Writing a number story: Learners will think of a number story to write, like: "1 flower grew so tall it reached the sun and the sun gave it a high five!". They draw the picture to represent their number, write the number, then dictate their story to you.

• Number Jar Worksheets: A big favorite in this curriculum, these number tracing worksheets have kids find a number of nature objects (or craft items for indoor), glue or tape them into their jar, and then trace the numbers.

• STEM cards: Learners use the number sense they have gained to build simple, fun projects. For example, "Build a tiny tent using 5 sticks and some leaves"

• Subitizing in nature mats: Leaners will use the knowledge they have gained in subitizing while going on a nature walk (or a walk around the house!) For example, in the square on this mat representing the number 2 with 2 tally marks, they will place 2 objects.

• Plenty of activities and warm-ups! I've been sure to include fun warm-ups like blowing bubbles, playing hopscotch or other active games so that kids will get their energy out and be able to sit for 5 minutes and complete a worksheet. These can all be found in the lesson plans and used how you wish.
