My World View:
Free Social Studies Units for Kindergarten
Social studies has always been one of my favorite subjects to teach, especially in younger years. Expanding kids' minds to view the world around them in a different light is always so exciting and brings about such great conversations. These new social studies units are based on just that - helping kids expand their worldview, study the world around them, and get to know themselves, their communities, and the world.
This is the first unit in a series that I will be expanding every month. This month's unit is a great way to kick off your kindergarten (or pre-k) year!
How the Units Work
In each My World View unit, you'll find a few options:
*A separate textbook and workbook
*One complete book containing the texts and worksheets
No matter how you decide to use it, the My World View units all will have one thing in common: they're open and go and easy to use - BUT contain everything you need to cover in Kindergarten.
Every day you do social studies, you'll read the simple text, then complete 1-2 worksheets or activities with your learner(s). So, besides printing out enough copies for your class ro homeschool, there's really no other prep needed.
However, since the texts are very simple, you might wish to read them ahead of time and think of some discussion points to bring up with your learners during reading. For example, when reading the page above about preferences, you might want to ask everyone to name something they like (pizza, perhaps?) and something they don't like (asparagus, if you'd ask my kids!)
Unit 1: I am Unique
In Unit 1 of My World View, kids will focus on themselves, their families, and learning basic information like their address and phone number. I find this unit is the simplest and a great way to kick off your year. The worksheets and activities are super simple, with some having different options for differentiation or different learners.
Inside you'll learn together about:
*We are all unique (with kids drawing a self-portrait and circling words about themselves (I am funny, I am smart, etc)
*My name (with kids either writing or cutting and pasting their name)
*My body (with kids cutting and pasting simple names such as head, arms, eyes, etc)
*Feelings and emotions (with kids matching emotions to expressions, and drawing things that make them feel different emotions, such as happy)
*Preferences (with kids circling their favorite things on a page, drawing their favorite things, and choosing whether they like something or not)
*Homes and families (with kids drawing a picture of their home and writing what type of dwelling they live in (house, apartment, etc))
*My address (with kids writing the different parts of their address simply (house number, street, apartment)
*My phone Number (with kids decorating and cutting out a pretend phone to practice calling their home and friends, a sheet to practice writing their phone number, and a page with an option to make their own address and phone number tags to carry with them)
*Different families (where kids will draw themselves doing their favorite activity with their family)
*Pets (where kids will draw their ideal pet and give it a name)
*My responsibilities (where kids will choose certain chores they would like to do to help at home and check off the days on which they do them)
