If I can remember one of the most painful parts of French class for myself in elementary school, it was definitely learning about verbs! My French teacher would post a big chart on the wall and have us read the same verb over and over...and over! Although it was great for memorization, I honestly at the time could never really visualize what those verbs meant. Why they sounded different when they were conjugated. How it's just like conjugating verbs in English.

That is why I began making these mini books for my kids a while back - and am now sharing them with you! Although memorizing the conjugations and endings of verbs is a very important part of writing in French, it's important for our learners to have a solid understanding of what that verb actually means and looks like.

Visualizing Verbs

These units all include a few similar things (you can see the rest of these units on my French page!)

• Flashcards showing the verb in the present tense (other tenses will eventually be released)
• A picture book showing the verb in sentences in the present tense (comes in both black and white and colour)
• Writing pages for all ages to use the verb in writing
• Conjugation practice pages that include using the verb in any tense in a sentence

Writing with Verbs

Using verbs kids learn in their writing is another important aspect of learning the basics of French verbs. Obviously, we want our kids to eventually achieve fluency in French in both writing and speaking, and it's never too early to begin!

These units include writing prompts for younger kids or kids who love to draw with illustrations or without. They also include journal prompts that can be used in student writing journals.

Conjugation Practice

Once learners are old enough and at a level where they understand the meaning of the verb and why it is conjugated, practice becomes super important! I've included two practice sheets in these units. One is outlined with the present tense, and another leaves the tense option blank so that you can fill it in or tell your students which tense to use. 

Both sheets have room to practice writing the proper conjunctions as well as space to write a sentence using the verb in that tense, and to illustrate their sentence to show they understand what they wrote.

Teaching kids about French verbs doesn't have to be boring! My French Verb units are all about making it simple and fun for both teacher and student. Best of all, they're completely free!

So far in this series of the present tense of French verbs, we have Avoir, Etre, Voir, and now we have Aller! Starting with irregular verbs can make teaching a bit simpler later on in your student's French journeys, so that is why these books begin with these verbs.

Introducing verbs in the present tense is a great way to start too - but don't fret if you have older learners! These units include things for them too!

What is Included?

Included in each of these units you'll find:

• French verb cards in the present tense for flashcards or to use as a display
• A French Verb book students can read using the present tense of the verb in sentences
• Writing pages for all ages
• Conjugation pages for present tense and all tenses

How Should I Use Them?

These units are a great introduction to French verbs and how they can be conjugated, just as verbs in English can be. I always start by introducing the verb using the cards, telling my learners 

"that in French, we use verbs or action words just as we do in English - we change the word for different tenses. The verb aller in French means 'to go'. In English we we want to say "You go to the store" it would mean that we are saying the action is happening right now - you are going to the store. If we wanted to say in English that we already went to the store we would say "I went to the store" - the verb to go changes to 'went'. It's the same for French, some verbs change a lot depending on when we did the action."

I will then introduce how the verb is conjugated in the present using the cards and then reading the book together. The writing exercises or conjugation sheets can be used afterward or on another day after you've practiced the verb a little bit.

French Writing Unit 3 - A Program for Beginner FSL Writers

Read Write & Spell in French Unit 3

A Complete program to take kids from writing vocabulary words to full sentences!

 Unit 1 and Unit 2 of this program have already been released! You can read about them and try out a free sample here!

Unit 3 is here - that's weeks 5 and 6! During these weeks, students will discover the proper use of 'tu' and 'vous' (in French these can both mean 'you', but there's an important distinction between them), learn some new sight words and already start to learn their very first verb - être.

Take a look below to see what is included, and how they'll build on what they have already learned.

What Will My Kids Learn?

In this unit, the focus will be on these important things:

• Use of 'tu' and 'vous'
• First part of the verb être
• More sight words
• Writing more than one sentence about a specific topic/prompt
• Review of previously learned concepts including masculine/feminine nouns, sentence order, and writing phrases

*Remember that these units are meant to be done over 2 weeks, but you can always make them last longer or take less time using them

What is included? Everything you'll need!

In every 2-week unit, you'll find everything you need to teach the concepts. These include:

• Posters and student-sized posters showing the rule of the unit
• A suggested pacing plan
• A scripted lesson plan explaining the rule and concepts
• Student booklets showing the dictation phrases with illustrations
• 2 weeks of worksheets in which students will practice the concepts taught and daily writing
• Weekly quizzes
• A student dictionary
• Answer keys

What if I don't know how to pronounce a word?

If you aren't sure how to pronounce a word in French, I highly recommend using a tool like https://forvo.com/languages/fr/. It is free and gives a few options showing the pronunciation of different words. 

If you and your child need to practice pronunciation more, you might choose to take longer on each of these units and spend some time just practicing that using the online tools.

Hands up if you are teaching a kiddo at home or in a classroom who doesn't do well with traditional math lessons! (I'm raising my own hand here!) While some kids do great with classic flat models and visuals in workbooks, other kids have trouble conceptualizing these things in real-life situations. Let's be honest too - most of the math we learned about measurement came from real-life experiences - house renovations, filling a pool, baking, etc. Even if you do have a child who learns well through workbooks, hands-on math lessons can be a great way to help them bring their math skills into the real world.

In this unit, kids will go beyond writing on a page with a hands-on lesson that teaches them about metric unit capacity. They'll measure, pour, search for items around the house or class, and do some thinking with the included questions. I made this unit with my own daughter in mind, and hope that it can help your kids or students too!

Teaching Capacity Through Hands-On Experiments and Thought-Provoking Questions

Math lessons can be fun too! This one can be done just like a typical elementary science experiment - more activity and thinking - less writing and seatwork. Included in this unit are anchor posters that will help you remind your learners of everything they've learned in the included lessons.

I've included two versions of these posters - one with a fun background and one with a plain white background for easier printing.

Scripted Lesson Plans Make Teaching Simple

Have you ever sat in front of a child to teach them a concept that you understand well - but have just not been able to explain it to them in kid-friendly terms? The included lesson plans make this simple!

The lesson plan tells you exactly what to do with your materials and your voice with scripted lessons.

This unit was written to be done as one longer lesson, but can definitely be broken down into shorter lessons over a few days. Feel free to adjust it to your and your learner's needs!

A Capacity HUNT and Discussion Questions

During the lesson, kids will go on a capacity hunt, hunting for containers around the home or classroom and describing their capacity. I've included a worksheet for them to use as a guide and to show what they worked on that day in math.

I've also included some thought questions or task cards that could be used as a class discussion, discussion in pairs, or even used along with a math journal for older students. 

Altogether, these resources make for a great lesson that will really give kids a great introduction to capacity and help them understand it on a more meaningful level. We want to raise critical math thinkers - not workbook tinkerers!

Wondering how to teach beginner French writing to your kids or class? Want them to go beyond just writing French vocabulary words? I designed these units for my own kids for just that very reason!

Teaching kids to learn French words in isolation is one thing, but teaching sentence structure, and grammar, and then expecting them to put it all together is another! These units make it super simple by using quick lessons, sight words, simple rules, and plenty of practice.

What's Included in the 2-week units?

• A word list with explanations for teachers and/or parents/tutors
• A word list or flashcards for students
• A rule poster to display
• Student-sized rule cards for notebooks
• Sample lesson plans (8 days of lessons)
• Daily worksheets (8 days of worksheets)
• Daily French dictations to read to students
• Student sentence books to practice reading the sentences and words they have learned
• Dictation pages for students, find a word activity for students

Lesson Plans and 2-Week Units

These units are all broken up into simple 2-week segments. Frencg grammar rules, words, and concepts are taught over 2 weeks so that students really get to know them well. There are different worksheets for every school day of the week, new dictations to use, and weekly quizzes too, so you can assess your student's learning.

Lesson plans are given along with a simple script to follow to teach the rule of the unit. These scripts make teaching these rules and French writing simple, even if you're not familiar with them yourself!

Plenty of Practice!

One thing students need when learning a language is plenty of practice. Written practice can help so much too as there is so much research showing the correlation between writing something down and memory. The worksheets included in these units cement the words and rules learned, while the dictations give kids a chance to see the words they've learned in sentences. Units also come with a phrasebook to give out to students that they can use to practice reading those dictations.

Additionally, at least 3 days per week (more in later units) students will be required to write their own sentences using the words they have learned. They can refer to their word sheets and phrase books to help them. It is also encouraged that students 'discover a word' every week using the word discovery page. This allows them to add in some extra vocabulary of something they really like - like a favourite game or activity. This word can then be used in their writing as well.

Creating Their Own Dictionaries

Two types of dictionaries kids can make are also included with these units. One has them write their words in French only and illustrate them, while the other has them write their words in both English and French. They're a great activity to include for students to refer to throughout the year.

I myself have learned so much by reading both fiction and nonfiction about different time periods, how people acted and reacted to situations, and how it truly felt to be a part of a major historical event - for better or worse. That's why I love the series 'I Survived' There are so many different novels full of stories to explore and learn about.

This unit study helps you do just that - but really dig into events and the people, places, and aftermath surrounding them. This unit has students make a beautiful lapbook to display the information they learn through the story and further research. It gives links, and ideas for integrating the unit study into geography, history, and even art. I had actually bought this book just a few weeks ago to use with my kids this year, so I was so pleasantly surprised to find this unit study in the Homeschool Collection Bundle!

Marine Science

I have to start off by saying that this book is HUGE! It covers the topic of marine science so completely, I believe it would be a great addition to any homeschool high school or middle school. It is basically a huge textbook! For kids like one of mine who are really interested in marine science, it's a great way to dive really deep into the topic.

The unit includes texts, vocabulary pages, comprehension questions, projects, and more! I really cannot wait to dive into this one with my kids soon!

Simple Machines

I have a third grader this year and so really want to do a unit with them all about simple machines, how they work, and why they're so important to our everyday lives. This unit fits that need perfectly!

Full of posters, texts, questions, quizzes, and more, it's a great way to introduce the concept and cover all of the basics without feeling too overwhelmed. The information is short and to the point (which I love for that age!) and covers everything kids need to know about pulleys, wheels and axels, screws, and more.

Finance

I know that there's a popular question going around the internet nowadays - why didn't they teach us how to do taxes/banking/etc in school. Well this unit does just that and it is AMAZING!

Now only does it go over the history of money and bartering, but it also covers basics like how to write a check or read a debit card, how to file taxes, how to budget, producers and consumers, loans and savings, salaries - everything your kids need to know about how the finance world works! This is another one I'm super excited to use with my own kids.

Science and Art Combined!

My youngest kiddo really loves to draw. She also really loves animals, making this unit a win for her. Including units on dogs, amphibians and reptiles, Australian animals, horses, dinosaurs, invertebrates, mammals, ocean animals, sharks, and types of fish!

It gives kids basic information about each type of animal and shows them how to draw it using the grid method - but makes it super simple. There are also some great comprehension pages to show what they've learned - perfect for portfolios and just for fun!

Art and Poetry

Art and poetry are something I always love to include in our homeschool. So I was so excited to see this unit included in the Homeschool Collection too! It's a super simple way to include both in your homeschool.
