Another phonics story is here! In this set, your learners will practice reading previously learned sight words and CVC words, answer questions about their reading using the comprehension questions, and learn that sentences need an action word. 

Just like all of my other CVC Stories, this unit goes beyond simply reading words and helps kids realize that literacy is more than just words on a page.

What's Inside a CVC Story?

Inside each CVC story, you'll find activities that support your learners' literacy development. In this book there is:

• A simple CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) and sight word story. This focuses on words kids have learned in order using my Phonics Booklets.
• Reading comprehension questions. These help assess if kids are simply reading words off a page from memory, or actually thinking about and absorbing what they are reading.
• A simple grammar or language lesson. In this unit, the focus is on 'sentences need an action' (a verb).
• Literacy activities. These include drawing comprehension (draw what the story was about), making connections, making predictions, and more.

Simple Stories & Activities

All of the included activities that go with each CVC story are made with preschool and kindergarten-age kids in mind. They focus on conversations and drawing rather than writing, since those skills are still developing. But this doesn't mean you necessarily have to use the pages as they are.

Although they could use the drawing comprehension page to draw what the story was about, you could also ask them what the story was about and write down their answer for them. Then, if they'd like to draw a picture or try to copy your sentence on the page, they can. There are many ways you could use these pages to best suit your class or kids.

Grammar & Language Lessons

Although kids at this age are too young to do traditional grammar lessons, I always like to point things out to them during reading and writing time. Sentences are made up of words. Sentences need a subject or an action word. These mini lessons use simple language, are to the point, and can be done orally without any writing or worksheets, although many of them do include simple drawing worksheets.

In CVC STory 8, the lesson focused on sentences needing to be about a person, a place, or a thing (a subject). In this story, the lesson focuses on sentences having an action word. The pages contain different examples, and I encourage you to go through the story with your learners after and pick out any action words you see in the sentences. Saying your own sentences with action words in them out loud is another great way to practice too.
