Quebec History for Grades 5-6! Historical Expeditions Unit 1 - Canada Around 1820

I am SO excited to be bringing you this all-new, FREE Quebec-aligned history curriculum for grades 5-6 (elementary cycle 3). One of my kiddos will be in this cycle next year and I'm really excited for her to use this - as well as all of your kids and students!

Just like my Quebec History Mysteries for grades 3-4, this program makes completing the required Quebec history curriculum simple, straightforward, and quick. It allows you and your kids to go at your own pace, and dive deeper into topics you love while getting the rest done.

And since these units are especially for slightly older kids, they have a few more options...

Work Digitally or Offline

For kids in grades 5-6, working more independently is usually a great option, especially if you have other younger kids you need to work with during the day too. These Quebec Expeditions will come in a folder with many options - print OR digital, OR a combo of both!

In the completely digital option, kids can use their Navigation Compass page to answer questions. These compass pages take them to the very awesome LEARN Quebec site that contains all of the information they need to know to fulfill the progressions. They can then show what they have learned by answering questions using Google slides. This allows them to not only work independently but to take the time to explore the Learn QC site more if they wish.

Another option would be to use the included informational texts, which can be printed or projected onto a screen. They can then read the text and fill in their answers. If you don't wish them to use the link at all, you can simply delete the slide that contains the links.

Then there is the printable option!

Here, kids can work completely offline and use only the included informational texts and the printable student answer sheets. You could also allow them to use the links included, but just fill out their answers on paper if they prefer - it's totally up to you and your student(s) to choose how to use this program!

Making Quebec History Motivating

In my Quebec History Mysteries for grades 3-4 I included a reward badge system. Kids collected badges for every unit they completed. In this program, kids will collect pieces of a map. Once they have completed all of grade 5 and 6 units, they will complete their map!

Every map piece contains a title showing the period they have studied as well as a photo or picture from that time. This is a great way to remember everything they have learned and to keep track of their completed units. It's also very motivating! These are also included in both printable and digital formats.

Quebec Progression of Learning Aligned

Whether you're a homeschool parent or a classroom teacher, you no doubt have had to deal with this huge document at some time. While it can seem overwhelming if you've never looked at it before, I can assure you it's pretty straightforward once you get to know it ;) TO make it even simpler to navigate, I've included a  list of all of the progressions that each unit will cover. You can use this to keep track of all of the progressions, or you can use my printable checklist found here alongside this list to check off everything you've covered.

However you choose to use these units, I hope you and your learners enjoy them, and that they make learning history just a little easier and more interesting! The Google drive link below will take you to a folder including all of the options you'll need to use.

For the Google Slides option, simply click on the link included in the document to make a copy of the slide for yourself. These slides will give you everything you need. 

For the printable option, just click on the document, save a copy for yourself, and print it out.

 Quebec History Mystery 23: Thirteen Colonies and New France Around 1745: Similarities and Differences

Welcome to another History Mystery - the FINAL unit for grades 3 and 4! If you've managed to get through all 23 with your kids, then congrats! That deserves a celebration! They'll have also earned all 23 badges (if you're covering both years)

In this unit, they'll be comparing New France, which they've learned a lot about, to the Thirteen Colonies around 1745.

As always the unit begins with a handy progression of learning checklist so that you know you're covering everything. If you want to keep a full checklist on hand, I have one of those available for free too - you can find them in this folder.

It also includes an easy-to-use QR code that can be scanned with a phone or tablet, or I've included a link if you'd prefer. Here students will need to navigate the page comparing the two societies and do some research to answer the comprehension questions - but don't worry because I've kept that simple to use too!

The comprehension questions are all categorized in the same way that the research page on Learn Quebec is. This way, students can easily locate the pages they need to read in order to answer the questions. 

These questions are perfect for showing what your child has learned in their homeschool or class portfolios - but they're also excellent for keeping things simple. If you'd like to dig deeper into a period in history then you can. If you'd like to just use the unit and answer the questions, then that's all you need to do to follow the progressions.

At the back of this unit, and most others, there are also extra maps and resources you can use during your lesson to get a better look at the societies you're learning about. of course, the badges are also here for your child to collect as they learn about history.

Changes in new France 1645-1745

In this unit, students will discover the changes that took place in the territory, people, government and economy of New France between 1645 and 1745.

As always, these units come with a quick and easy to use QR code for research (or a link in the back).

My kids love to grab their tablet or my phone and use the code to look up information. As with most of these units, the link takes you to a page from Learn QC. Here they'll find all of the information they need to complete the entire unit and cover all the progressions.

These units also come with comprehension questions to show what your child has learned. These questions show that you have covered all of the progressions, as is required by law in Quebec. I am always sure to make the questions simple and to the point to make learning a little easier for kids this age.

In some units, there are small projects, but you may choose to add your own projects, books, or videos to make learning about these time periods more fun. We actually study ancient history alongside these units so we use these as more of a fill-in for what they would be learning in school.

And, of course, to make the unit FUN there is a badge for kids to earn for each unit. This is just a way to help keep them motivated and wanting to do the next units too!

I am also sure to include maps and graphs that can be helpful to use throughout the units as you go. Seeing as how this is the second to last unit for grades 3-4, there are no new maps in this one, but the same ones as the previous unit.

Quebec History Mystery 21 Changes in Iroquoian Society 1500 and 1745

It's the next History Mystery! This is the third-to-last unit in the Cycle 2 Elementary free program! Want the other units? Check out my history resources page or head to my Quebec Homeschool Helps blog.

In this unit, learners will compare Iroquoian life between 1500 and 1745. They'll explore changes in the population, territory, and daily life of the first peoples of Quebec.

As always these units come with a list of the progressions that are covered in them. In this unit, the progression under the competency 'Knowledge related to change in a society or territory' is used: Iroquoian society between 1500 and 1745.

This unit comes with only one QR code for research - and learners will need to so some serious detective work to solve the mystery questions! (But don't worry - the answers are simple to find!)

The comprehension questions in this unit will help cover the progressions and show your student's understanding of the changes in the society. Although the questions cover the basics, your learners might want to explore the site further and learn more - feel free to travel beyond the page and dig into learning! 

Learn Quebec also has made a really neat, free-to-print board game for describing changes in the Iroquoian society at this time! You can check it out here. It's a great way to reinforce what you've learned or use in place of worksheets if your kiddo isn't a fan. And remember - you could always answer the questions in these units orally with your learners - there is no need to always write everything down.

Ready for the next history mystery? We're up to number 20 now and almost done with cycle 2! See the rest of the units for this cycle and more on the History resources page!

In this final unit detailing life in New France around 1745, kids will learn all about what people did - for work, for fun, and how they get around.

As always this unit comes with super simple QR codes to use for research. Although this unit has a few more than usual, the texts are all very short and to the point. You could spread it out over a week, or even a few! With just 3 more units to go for cycle 2 elementary, you'll have no trouble spreading out all 3 units over 2 years of learning!

The unit also comes with a handy list of progressions that it covers. You can use my free progression checklists to keep track of all of the history progressions for cycle 2 too!

You'll also get simple sheets with comprehension questions on them. There is one sheet for QR code to make sorting through research even easier. I've also included answer sheets for you to use to check your learner's work afterward.

As with all of my other units, there is also a few pages of maps, charts, and diagrams that you can use in your home or classroom to help students remember what they have learned.

 Quebec History Mystery 19: Who Rules New France 1745?

Another history unit is here! This unit will cover the main 'Political Situation' progressions in the Quebec Education program progressions of learning for New France around 1745 (for grades 3-4 / cycle 2)

As always these units come with very easy-to-use QR codes for research. 

In this unit, one QR code is used to answer comprehension questions, while another is used to do a timeline project.

The progressions checklist is a great way to keep track of which progressions the unit covers so that you'll know exactly what you are covering in this unit. You can alongside my free progression checklists for each grade to help you.

In this unit, you'll find a page of comprehension questions to show what your child has learned, as well as a fun timeline project kids can do about some of the intendants of New France.

These make great portfolio additions and are easy to put into binders and notebooks for safekeeping. I have also included an answer key to help, especially for parents of students who do most of their work on their own.

 Free Writing Unit: Trace Color and Write for Kids who Love to Draw!

Do you have a kiddo who LOVES to draw - and draw and draw? I do! That is why I made these super cute and fun trace, color and write pages - and am sharing them with you!

My youngest especially loves to trace pictures lately and make up stories about them, so to encourage her creativity I thought these would be a lot of fun. They're a great way to fit in some extra writing practice every day, and even have some sneaky vocabulary words slipped into them that will help your kids write better!

In this little bundle I've included 8 pages of writing prompts - 8 with word banks and 8 without. The drawings are pretty and inviting for kids to trace and characters and objects that will inspire their imagination!

They would be great boredom busters at home, or perfect for teachers who have early finishers in their classroom who need something engaging to do. They could easily be printed out and put on a table for kids to choose from.

I've also included a blank page that your learners can use to trace any drawing they would like to and write a story about it. If you use simple copy paper to print these on, it's usually pretty simple to trace with. My youngest has also hung a picture she wants to trace on a  window before and then put a piece of copy paper over it to trace. Of course, light tables work amazingly if you're lucky enough to have one too!
